Introduction:

Free course to be held in AIMEN facilities (Porriño, Spain), in February 26, 2026, from 9:00 to 17:00 (CET), to acquire practical and hands-on knowledge about the methods, equipment and technology of laser-based surface engineering for research, production and advanced product design, using the unique characteristics of ultrafast laser to selectively generate .

The course is free of charge thanks to the support of Photonhub. Please check https://www.aimen.es/formacion, or https://photonhub.eu/training, to request registration. You can also license the training here to access the basic information, and later on register to the training.

In this course you will:

- Learn about the key principles of laser surface functionalization.

- Learn about processing strategies and key process parameters in surface functionalization with ultrashort pulse lasers.

- Acquire the necessary skills to select the appropriate laser equipment for your industrial application.

It's structured in one technical/theoretical session, plus three hands-on demonstration, covering a total of 6 hours.

Table of contents:

  • Lecture: for approximately 1.5 hours, students will learn about basic concepts about laser radiation and laser-matter interaction, as well as about the laser ablation process for surface texturing and functionalization. This first part of the course will be also dedicated to present different surface characterization methods and basic concepts related to laser safety.
  • Demo 1 (1h and 30 min): Surface functionalization by a direct laser texturing processIn this first laboratory exercise, attendees will learn about the different key process parameters involved in a laser surface texturing process, as well as different working strategies to obtain functional surfaces.
  • Demo 2 (1h and 30 min): Laser beam shaping for advanced surface functionalizationIn the second laboratory exercise, attendees will learn about various optical methods for guiding and parallelizing laser beams. This second Demo will be focused on speeding up the laser texturing process and enabling the laser processing of complex 3D parts.
  • Demo 3 (1h and 30 min): Characterization of functional surfaces. In the final laboratory exercise, attendees will characterize the samples generated in Demos 1 and 2 by using a confocal microscope to evaluate the surface topography of the textures, they will also measure the water contact angle of the surfaces.

Training language may be in English or Spanish, and the content can be adapted to the needs and interests of the attendants, including the processing of their particular samples or materials.

Target Audience:

Any person requiring to acquire general but well grounded knowledge about the methods, equipment and capabilities of laser-based functional surfaces on metals, ceramics and polymers. This includes students, manufacturing engineers, product designers or decision-makers involved in the purchase of manufacturing equipment or deployment of surface modification processes.

Prerequisites:

Physicists and engineers with knowledge of laser processes and materials science will benefit from their background, but the initial lecture will provide entry-level knowledge to anyone with expertise in manufacturing processes to understand the subsequent demonstrations.
